In the beginning there were Ruby and Tawny styles, followed later by 10-year-old, 40-year-old, Reserve, Late Bottled Vintage, and Vintage Ports. All Port wines are made using the same winemaking process. What sets them apart is the length and style of their ageing.
Oxidative Ports (Tawny, Tawny Reserve, Aged Tawny, Colheita) mature in contact with air and wood, developing complexity through traditional blending and the unique style of each producer. Reductive Ports (Ruby, Ruby Reserve, Late Bottled Vintage, Vintage) mature with little to no exposure to air, preserving fruit purity and highlighting the terroir from which they originate.
