White Port wine is one of Portugal's best-kept secrets. Produced in the Douro Valley, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, White Port is made exclusively from white grape varieties such as Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, Rabigato and Viosinho. Unlike its red counterparts, White Port offers a completely different flavour profile — fresh, elegant and surprisingly versatile.
Like all Port wines, White Port is a fortified wine. The fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit, preserving the natural sugars of the fruit and giving the wine its characteristic sweetness and strength. White Port is aged in oak barrels, which give it its distinctive golden colour and develop its complex aromas of dried fruits, almonds, honey and citrus.
White Port comes in several styles to suit every palate. The Dry and Extra Dry styles offer a crisp, refreshing finish with subtle notes of almonds and citrus peel, making them perfect as an aperitif. The sweeter styles, such as Lagrima, are rich and luscious, ideal to accompany desserts or aged cheeses. Reserve White Ports, aged for longer periods, develop extraordinary complexity with notes of dried apricot, toasted nuts and caramel.
White Port is best served chilled, between 10°C and 12°C, in a wide-bowled glass that allows its delicate aromas to fully develop. The most popular and fashionable way to enjoy White Port is the classic Porto Tónico — White Port served over ice with tonic water, a slice of lemon and fresh mint. This refreshing long drink has become one of the most popular aperitifs in Portugal and is gaining popularity across Europe. White Port also pairs beautifully with salted almonds, smoked salmon, sushi, mild cheeses and light desserts such as lemon tart or panna cotta.
The versatility of White Port makes it an exceptional wine for food pairing. A dry White Port works wonderfully as an aperitif alongside seafood, particularly prawns, scallops and cured fish. The sweeter styles complement foie gras, blue cheese and fruit-based desserts. For a truly Portuguese experience, try a chilled glass of White Port with a plate of presunto and regional cheeses — a combination that perfectly reflects the flavours and traditions of the Douro Valley.
