What is Vinho Verde?
Vinho Verde — literally "green wine" — is one of Portugal's most original and refreshing wines. Produced in the Minho region of northwestern Portugal, near the Spanish border, it takes its name not from its colour but from its youth: it's a wine made to be drunk young, in the year following the harvest, to capture its full freshness and vivacity.
With annual production exceeding 80 million litres, Vinho Verde is Portugal's most exported wine. Its lightness (8-12% alcohol), natural gentle effervescence, and very accessible price make it the perfect wine for casual occasions and warm weather drinking.
The Characteristics of Vinho Verde
White Vinho Verde — the most internationally recognised style — is made primarily from Alvarinho, Loureiro, and Arinto grapes. It is characterised by its pale yellow colour with green highlights, aromas of lemon, grapefruit, white peach, and white flowers, lively acidity, and a light natural sparkle that gives it an incomparable sense of freshness.
Red Vinho Verde also exists — little known outside Portugal but very popular locally — light, slightly tannic, and always served very chilled. A local curiosity worth exploring.
Alvarinho: The Star Grape of Vinho Verde
Alvarinho (known as Albariño in Spain) is the noblest grape variety in the region, grown primarily in the Monção e Melgaço sub-region near the Spanish border. Alvarinho-based Vinho Verdes are more concentrated, richer, and more complex than the classic blends, with aromas of apricot, peach, citrus, and a distinctive saline minerality.
Food Pairings with Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde is the ideal companion for seafood: grilled sardines, prawns, scallops, mussels. It also pairs beautifully with summer salads, sushi, and spicy Asian dishes. Its freshness and acidity also make it an excellent aperitif — especially on a warm summer afternoon.
Vinho Verde and Port: Two Faces of Portugal
If Port represents the depth, complexity, and prestige of Portuguese wine tradition, Vinho Verde is its perfect counterpoint: youthful, light, fresh, and immediately pleasurable. Together, they perfectly illustrate the extraordinary diversity of Portuguese viticulture. Porto Vintage offers a curated selection of both styles so you can explore the full spectrum of Portuguese wine.
