How to properly store a bottle of Port?

Although it’s best to drink Port as soon as possible after opening, you can keep it for a while if you follow a few simple steps.

First, store the bottle of Port in a cool, dark place—such as a wine cellar or kitchen cupboard—at a steady temperature of around 12–15 °C (54–59 °F). Avoid exposing it to sunlight or extreme temperatures, as this can affect the wine’s taste and quality.

It’s also important to keep the Port bottle standing upright rather than lying down. This prevents the cork from drying out and deteriorating, which could lead to premature oxidation of the wine.

Finally, if you don’t plan to finish the bottle within a reasonable time, consider resealing it with a wine stopper or transferring the remaining Port into a smaller bottle to reduce air exposure. Remember that Port is a fortified wine and lasts longer than unfortified wines, but it’s still best enjoyed within 2 to 3 weeks after opening.

By following these simple tips, you’ll fully enjoy your Port and appreciate all its flavors and aromas, even weeks later.
